A Cuba airplane crash happened today, Friday, May 18, 2018, at 12:08 pm local time at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport. The airlines was Cubana de Aviacion, and it is believed that of the 100-plus people onboard, only 3 survived.

The Boeing 737-200 had just taken off when it crashed into thick vegetation just a few miles from the runway. It appears the plane had turned back towards the airport and struck a power line.

Three female passengers onboard Flight DMJ 0972 survived the Cuba airplane crash. One has died and two are in critical condition.

A witness said the plane swerved to one side and the engines revved before crashing. There was a huge fireball followed by a large plume of black smoke.

Search and rescue personnel along with residents worked side by side to put out the fire.

There were 5 Mexican nationals that formed the crew onboard. Nobody on the ground was injured.

Cuba President Migue Diaz-Canel said: “There has been an unfortunate aviation accident. The news is not very promising, it seems that there is a high number of victims.”

State TV said it was an internal flight from the Cuban capital to the city of Holguin, on the eastern side of the island.

Mexican authorities said the aircraft was built in 1979 and was last inspected in November 2017.

Aerolineas Damojh, also known as Global Air, has three planes in operation. This particular aircraft was being leased to Cubana de Aviacion, a state airline, by the Mexican company Aerolineas Damojh.
