British Prime Minister Theresa May is set to visit Kenya next week with high expectations to raise the travel and tourism business portfolio in East Africa.

The Kenyan government said in its recent statement that the British Prime Minister is expected to visit this African country next Thursday, August 30, on a special tour aimed to boost trade between Kenya and the United Kingdom, among other cooperation areas.

Reports from the Kenyan capital of Nairobi said that Theresa May’s visit is expected to boost tourism in the East African region through media publicity of her tour, the first in Africa since she took over the office from David Cameron.

Tourism is a key agenda set for discussion between the British Prime Minister and Kenyan President Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta. Kenya is in talks with the British Government to have the UK visa office re-established in Nairobi.

Standing the leading tourist destination in Eastern and Central Africa, Kenya is looking to maintain its tourism and travel relations with Britain, the leading source of tourists to East Africa. Kenya receives most British tourists landing in East Africa.

Over 168,000 British tourists visited Kenya in 2017, making Britain the largest tourist market source for Kenya’s tourism. There is over 100 British travel trade companies established in Kenya working for ground tourist handling, accommodation services, and travel agencies among other safari services.

The visit of the British Prime Minister is a blessing to other East African countries neighboring Kenya which will share in benefits for tourism from her visit.

Nairobi is the leading tourist hub in East and Central Africa where most tourists from the UK land before taking air and overland connections to other regional destinations.

Kenya is as well set to host the Africa Hotel Investment Forum (AHIF) along with the Magical Kenya Tourist Exhibition early in October.

With high expectations to boost tourism and trade between North America and East Africa, Kenya Airways will launch its first flight to the United States later in the same month.

The much-awaited Kenya’s Airways direct flight to the US will be the first in East Africa. Most travelers flying between North America and East African major cities connect their flights through other airports outside the region.

The East African region is made up of 6 countries – Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan – all of which lack reliable and viable air links to key tourist market sources in Europe, North America, Australia, and the Far East.

Currently, Kenya Airways is the only reliable airline serving the region with regional and international flights to Europe and Asia where most tourists are sourced. The rest of the government-owned airlines in this region are lacking modern aircraft, facing hostile politics with poor business strategic plans, and lacking trained personnel in the aviation industry.
