New Zealand tourism companies are optimistic about sales and profits for this first time since March, according to a survey.

An index of industry confidence rose to 105 this month from 89 in July, according to a report published by the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Industry Association. A measure exceeding 100 means optimists outnumber pessimists.

Forty percent of the 451 companies surveyed said demand may rise in the next three months, up from 32 percent last month. Thirty-six percent expect a decline, down from 40 percent.
